A Picture Book, One Page at a Time
Scroll gently, and follow the little cucumber as it grows — one page at a time.
1
Deep in the vines, a small pale-green cucumber was growing. Grandmother pulled it close with her rough old hands.
“Some people just won't like you. And that — that is never, ever your fault.”
2
“Listen to me. Don't ever grow tall. When you see a big hand, get down low to the ground.” No sooner had she spoken than Grandmother was swept up into the sky — and she was gone.
3
After that, whenever the thunder rolled, the little cucumber pressed itself flat to the earth. With all the tall ones gone, the forest was dark. It was frightened.
4
Someone lifted the little cucumber and dropped it into a cart. A sharp iron gate clanged, and light came pouring over its eyes.
“Ugly — every last one of them.” A pale hand was picking through the cucumbers.
5
One by one, the others were cut in two and gone. Just as it cried out to be spared, the pale hand snatched it up.
“Didn't even finish forming. This one's soap!”
6
It woke as a bar of soap, high on a bathhouse shelf. The people didn't like it. The little cucumber couldn't understand why — after all it had done to grow plump and full.
7
The old laundry soap, worn and deeply wrinkled, felt just like Grandmother. Every night the two of them lay side by side in the moonlight.
“Not everyone is going to love you. But that doesn't make you any less precious.”
8
So the little cucumber set out to find something it could do here.
“How lovely — this one never wears away.” At those kind words, it worked up soft bubbles, day after day. And the little cucumber was happy.
9
One day, the old laundry soap slipped from the shelf and broke clean in two. The little cucumber held the broken pieces close. And when the frail old soap was gone too, it came to know: someday, it would be thrown away as well.
10
That very night, beneath a pile of towels bound for the trash, it spotted a small gray towel struggling to pull itself free — soaked through with water and slippery soap.
11
“Nobody likes me. Go away.” But the little cucumber was so glad to have found someone just like itself.
“Plenty of people don't like me either. I'd love it if we could be friends.”
12
“I knew you, you know. You left a sweet scent wherever you passed.” Deep in the night, the little cucumber began to wash the sleeping gray child clean with bubbles. All night long its small round body moved beneath the moon, growing smaller, and thinner.
13
When morning came, all that was left was a single, dazzling-white towel. All that day, the bathhouse murmured and would not settle.
“It feels so empty without the little cucumber. We… we miss it.”
The little one who only wanted to be loved
learned, in the end, how to love.
